WESTERN SYDNEY UNIVERSITY & MADE IN THE WEST FILM FESTIVAL.
Illustration, Poster Design, Marketing.
THE BRIEF:
I had the pleasure of creating a themed identity design for the Made in the West Film Festival 2023, which embraced an Outer Space (Intergalactic Traveller) theme. The brief called for a fusion of space elements with whimsical, bright, and magical visuals to capture the festival’s adventurous spirit.
THE SOLUTION:
My design features a mystical astronaut holding an orb, symbolizing their magical powers. Their hidden face sparks curiosity, reinforcing the mystery of the intergalactic traveller. A low-angle cityscape immerses viewers in a futuristic vision of Western Sydney, incorporating often-overlooked local elements like public buses, small businesses, and the iconic Roxy Theatre in Parramatta. The composition blends multiple suburbs, highlighting Western Sydney as a whole.
The background features floating film reel tethers, subtly nodding to cinema. The cyberpunk-inspired colour palette, influenced by Blade Runner 2049, merges neon cityscapes with an outer space aesthetic. This theme is reinforced through neon signs, futuristic details, and glowing accents.
Final assets included a lightbox poster, web banner, and award certificate, all designed to maintain a cohesive festival identity while emphasizing the fusion of film, space, and urban culture.
